Volunteer Information

The Commiserate Chicago 2020 New Media Art Festival & Object-Oriented Orgasm Hackathon (OOOHack) are currently looking for volunteers to help us setup and coordinate the events!

As a volunteer, you will work with our organizing committee to make sure everyone is having the spiciest time at the festival. You will get to know a community of local & international artists, performers, scholars, creators, and thinkers. 

Additionally, you get special access to our opening reception limited to the participating artists, workshop leaders, hackathon cohort, mentors, keynote, and sponsors. Snacks and beverages provided!

Volunteer positions

Responsibilities:

  • Assist our committee with receiving, installing, and de-installing the artwork.

Preferences:

  •  You have gallery installation experience and are comfortable with hand tools like drills, hammer, and standing on ladders, etc.

Times Needed

  • Pre-festival: flexible hours during the week of February 24th to February 28th
  • Post-festival: flexible hours from March 2nd to March 3rd

Responsibilities:

Before festival 

  • Help print promotional materials
  • Distribute promotional materials around campus and online communities

During festival

  • Welcome visitors at the entrance, hand out festival programs and provide wayfinding information, including directions to events, talks, workshops, performances, and other locations on campus
  • On rotation, walk around the venue to ensure everything in in order, and report to the committee if anything unusual occurs

Preferences

  • You are familiar with the MADD Center & UChicago campus!

Times Needed

  • Pre-festival: flexible hours during the week of February 24th to February 28th
  • Festival shift: February 29th to March 1st, 9:45am to 8:00pm (break included)

Responsibilities:

  • Assist & facilitate select interactive artworks
  • Answer audience questions about artworks
  • Norify the AV/Tech team and the committee if something stops working

Preferences:

  • You have a passion for new media art and know how to explain the abstract concepts and the latest technologies to people who are less familiar with the terminologies

Times Needed

  • February 29th to March 1st, 9:45am to 8:00pm (shift and break flexible)

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with setting up supplies for workshops & talks and help facilitate during the workshops & talks as needed

Preferences:

  • Excellent interpersonal communication and collaboration skills

Times Needed

  • February 29th to March 1st, 10:00am to 5:00pm (shift and break flexible)

Responsibilities:

  • Help with setting up AV equipment for keynotes, workshops, talks, and exhibitions
  • Be around to fix any technical issues

Preferences:

  • You are experienced with AV/Tech and are comfortable working in a busy environment of an art festival open to public!

Times Needed

  • February 29th to March 1st, 9:45am to 6:00pm (shift and break flexible)

All volunteers are required to be present at a short in-person orientation at MADD Center prior to the festival (date and time TBD). All contributing volunteers will be credited and listed on our website.
